Australia taxes imported goods sold to consumers at checkout for consignments up to a clear threshold, uses a formal customs system above it, and quarantines more product categories than most exporters expect. This guide gives US brands the working basics before they launch down under.
For goods worth 1,000 Australian dollars or less sold by an overseas business to an Australian consumer, GST at 10 percent is generally charged by the seller at the point of sale, provided the seller meets the registration threshold for Australian sales. The model was designed so small parcels cross the border without a tax bill for the buyer, mirroring the approach now used in several other markets.
Above that value, GST and any duty are handled through the customs import process instead, and the goods need a formal import declaration. As with other threshold systems, the consignment value decides the route, so basket values hovering near the line need checkout logic that knows which treatment an order falls under before promising the customer a final price.
When the sale runs through an online marketplace that facilitates it, the marketplace is commonly treated as the seller for the low value GST rules, just as in the UK system. Redelivery services, where an Australian consumer uses an overseas address provided by a third party, have their own allocation of responsibility. A brand selling direct and through marketplaces has two different compliance pictures to maintain.
Registration itself is simpler than full Australian tax registration for many overseas sellers, with a simplified GST registration available. Simpler is not optional, though: businesses over the threshold that skip registration create problems for their own parcels at the border and for marketplace partners who report the sales.
Australia's biosecurity controls are strict by design. Wood products, food items, seeds, animal products, and anything that might carry pests or disease can be inspected, treated at the importer's cost, or destroyed. Consumer brands shipping gift sets, natural cosmetics, pet products, or wooden packaging should check each product against the biosecurity conditions before the first campaign, not after a seizure notice.
Standard restricted categories apply too, from therapeutic goods claims to electrical approvals. The recurring theme is that Australia enforces at the border, physically, so paperwork optimism gets tested by an actual inspection more often than exporters from looser systems expect.
Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are one delivery story; Perth and regional areas are another, with transit times that can double. US brands used to two day national delivery should set Australian expectations by zone, publish cut offs in local time, and consider whether east coast stock or a local fulfilment partner is justified once order volume is proven.
Returns deserve the same realism. Asking an Australian customer to post a return to the US at their cost ends the relationship; local return addresses, prepaid labels for faults, and clear policies for change of mind returns are part of the true cost of the market. Brands that budget for them keep customers. Brands that discover them improvise badly.

For imported goods worth 1,000 Australian dollars or less sold to Australian consumers, once the seller's Australian sales pass the registration threshold. The tax is collected at the point of sale so the parcel clears without a buyer tax bill.
GST and any applicable duty are dealt with through the formal customs import process, with an import declaration. The value of the consignment decides which system applies, which is why checkout logic near the threshold matters.
Australia protects its agriculture and environment with active border inspection. Food, wood, seeds, animal products, and similar goods can be treated, seized, or destroyed if they do not meet import conditions, so product level checks must happen before shipping.
Usually the marketplace facilitating the sale is treated as the seller for low value imported goods GST, while direct website sales leave the duty with the brand. Each channel needs its own compliance setup.
